Forgetting to Add Water

Water level is an essential part of maintaining a flooded lead-acid battery. If the level gets too low, the internal plates can be exposed to air. This will reduce battery capacity and will cause damage that is difficult to correct.


Filling should follow a clear routine. It should not depend only on the operator’s memory.


Adding Too Much Water

Adding too much water can also create problems. While charging, the electrolyte level will rise. If the battery is overfilled, spillage can happen.

However, equalization must be done according to the manufacturer’s recommendations and with an adapted charger. It should not be applied automatically to all batteries or all chemistries.


Ignoring Heat and Ventilation

Charging a lead-acid battery produces hydrogen. This is why the charging area must be well ventilated and protected from flames, sparks, or electric arcs.


Heat is also a factor to monitor. A battery that heats abnormally during charging may indicate a charger issue, a charging method issue, or a battery issue.


Not Cleaning the Battery
